Why "Swing
Samurai"? Definitions for "Swing": 'to move freely...' or as pertains to music: 'a style of music suitable for dancing...as in the 1930's and '40's.' Definitions for "Samurai": 'an aristocratic Japanese warrior' yet more can be said about these individuals. For instance they would strive to represent all manner of cultural perfections and philosophical wisdoms. I'm a poet, artist, martial artist and a singer song writer. My grand-dad was an artist and drummer and my grand-ma was an on and off Broadway dancer and they met working in the swing clubs of 1930's Chicago.
I
really dig the fact that the name Swing Samurai brings
all these great images to mind. Remember the
Samurai were much more than master swordsmen and
warriors. They took all aspects of life and
culture very seriously ( e.g. the tea ceremonies they
were responsible for creating), they were known as
poets, artist's, philosophers, healers and so on.
I believe that what is done with music can follow all of
these paths. But (all) in all I still believe it's
a very cool band name. I think you'll' really dig
the tee-shirts too.
The members on this album are all professional, well-honed, very inspired musicians. And it is amazing to work with these guys and gals. They have played with some of the top bands and artists on the planet. The musicians who played with me are spread from Los Angeles to New York; including Texas. The producer, Dave Jenkins managed to contact each one and pull them into the studio. Half these guys surf when they get a chance and all of them are Cosmic Cowboy Rockers.
Where
does the music come from? Sometimes it will be the sound of my Dobro. Other times it will be what I see on a corner or at the neighborhood church (song: "Church of Stone") and maybe when I hear an old tune on the radio. Sometimes, I am trying out a chord progression and some fingerpicking and there it is; another song. I've listened to everything and everyone. When I think of the genre of my music I think of:
Elvis And the list goes on and on and on and on. All Hail to Rock and Roll! RWRoldan 2005
